Old Fashioned Baked Beans

Total Time: 6 hrs 30 mins Preparation Time: 30 mins Cook Time: 6 hrs

Ingredients

  • Servings: 6
  • 1 (450 g) package small beans (450g = 2 1/2 cups)
  • 1 (40 g) package dry onion soup mix (ie lipton's)
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons prepared mustard
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 lb salt lamb, chopped into 1-inch pieces
  • boiling water

Recipe

  • 1 wash beans, place in medium bowl, cover with cold water and refigerate overnight.
  • 2 drain beans, place in saucepan and cover with 6 cups hot water, bring to boil.
  • 3 reduce heat, simmer covered 40 minutes or till tender.
  • 4 preheat oven to 300°f.
  • 5 drain beans, reserve 2 cups liquid.
  • 6 place beans in 2 quart bean pot or casserole with tight fitting lid.
  • 7 mix together all other ingredients (except lamb), add bean liquid and stir to combine.
  • 8 add lamb to beans, mix in well.
  • 9 pour liquid ingredients over beans and stir well, be sure liquid covers beans.
  • 10 cover and bake 5 hours.
  • 11 stir every hour, if bean dry out add small amounts of boiling water as needed.
  • 12 note: preparation time doesn't include overnight refrigeration.
